How a Passion for Orthopedic Surgery Became a Family Affair | McLaren Health Care News

[ad_1]

Author: Sarah Barber

“I was pleasantly surprised when not just one, but two of my sons chose medicine and ultimately adult reconstruction as their interest in orthopaedics.”

Imagine going to a family BBQ, fracturing a bone, and having four orthopedic surgeons around the table who know exactly what to do.

This is a real-life scenario that happened when the Mesko family was together. That’s because many members of the Mesko family are orthopedic surgeons: you could even say it runs in the family.

“I would tell my kids as they were growing up to find a career that energized them,” said Wes Mesko, MD, orthopedic surgeon who performs surgery at McLaren Greater Lansing. “I was pleasantly surprised when not just one, but two of my sons chose medicine and ultimately adult reconstruction as their interest in orthopaedics.”

Dr. Wes Mesko has been practicing orthopedic medicine in the Lansing area for the past 32 years. Now his son, Dr. Daniel Mesko, DO, has joined him in practice in 2018 at Michigan Orthopedic Center.

“I had the benefit of seeing what an orthopedic surgeon looked like since I was a child. This included the good and the bad; from long hours, the unpredictable nature of being on call, weekend responsibilities, the good of watching people recover their mobility and activity levels, maintain their independence, and have relief from painful conditions,” said Daniel Mesko, DO, orthopedic surgeon at Michigan Orthopedic Center.

Dr. (Dan) Mesko was able to experience the field from numerous perspectives growing up from making rounds with his dad and observing surgeries at a young age. He also traveled to Kenya several times to assist in orthopedic care, to working collecting data in the office setting, and as an orthopedic technician prior to attending medical school. All this shaped his desire to enter orthopedics.

However, Dr. Dan Mesko isn’t the only family member to take an interest in orthopedic surgery. Dr. Wes Mesko’s oldest son, Nathan Mesko, MD, works at Cleveland Clinic as an orthopedic surgery oncology specialist. Dr. Wes Mesko’s daughter-in-law, Sheeba Joseph, MD, works at Michigan State University as an orthopedic surgery sports medicine specialist. Her uncle is Jacob George, MD, a retired orthopedic surgeon who practiced in Clovis, New Mexico. And, finally, Dr. Wes Mesko nephew Josh Lawrenz, MD, works at Vanderbilt as an orthopedic surgery oncology specialist.

“Being able to work with family members in the same field offers the ability to share a unique bond that most people don’t get in their careers,” said Dr. (Dan) Mesko. “It’s nice to always have expert opinions so conveniently at my disposal.  Each of us has a unique viewpoint on approaching an orthopedic problem, shaped by the intricacies of each of our own training, and this can be invaluable when caring for my patients.”

As for his family that has chosen a career in medicine Dr. Wes Mesko shared, “I hope they will honor God, love and support their families, give excellent orthopedic care to the patients who are entrusted to them, and to look critically at the profession they have trained in, and intentionally make our profession better through teaching, research, innovation, and volunteerism.”

New surgeon continues family legacy of orthopedic care | Local News

[ad_1]

Dr. Michael Giovan grew up listening to his father, an orthopedic physician of 30 years, talk about interesting and challenging cases. Observing firsthand how much his own father enjoyed his work prepared Dr. Giovan to pursue a path in orthopedics and recently join Mercy Clinic Orthopedic Surgery – Ada.

“Orthopedics is a great field because we generally work with conditions or injuries that are treatable,” said Dr. Giovan. “I’m passionate about living an active lifestyle, and it’s very rewarding to hear a patient’s story and then help them get back to what they love after an injury.”

Dr. Giovan brings more than 16 years of experience in orthopedic and sports medicine with a focus in shoulder injuries. He spent an extra year of fellowship training to learn more about advanced shoulder surgical procedures, allowing him to expand his expertise in total shoulder and reverse total shoulder reconstruction and replacement.

“As a child, I was always working with my hands, either assembling models or tinkering with remote cars,” said Dr. Giovan. “This career gives me the chance to apply what I love and make a real impact.”

Originally from Santa Rosa, California, Dr. Giovan felt drawn to practice in a rural community like Ada where he could develop closer relationships with patients and the community. In his spare time, he enjoys playing golf and hiking. Growing up in California’s wine country also fostered his love for collecting wine.

Dr. Giovan said, “We want patients to know that they don’t have to travel out of town to find high-quality expertise and fellowship-level care. We can provide it close to home.”

Dr. Giovan earned a bachelor’s in molecular and cell biology from the University of California, Berkley, and a medical degree from George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington D.C. He later completed an orthopedic surgery residency at Maricopa Integrated Health System in Phoenix, Arizona and a fellowship in shoulder and sports medicine at The CORE Institute in Sun City West, Arizona.

Christus Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Institute in Longview officially opens | Local News

[ad_1]

The Christus Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Institute officially opened Thursday at the NorthPark campus in Longview.

Construction on the $35 million project began in July 2021 to transform the existing Institute for Healthy Living into the new institute.

In addition, the project has added 27,000 square feet of space at NorthPark, including dedicated operating rooms for orthopedic surgical procedures.

The full NorthPark expansion is projected to be complete by the end of fall 2023.

The Institute for Healthy Living continues to serve as a community gym, but has expanded its hours of operation to 24 hours a day. The institute also has been integrated into the recovery process of the orthopedic and sports medicine services at the facility.

“There is absolutely nothing else like this in Longview,” Todd Hancock, Good Shepherd Health System president and CEO, said during a July 2021 groundbreaking ceremony. “We are creating the first of its kind in Longview — an entire campus dedicated to orthopedic care.”

The new campus aims to offer one centralized location for patients in every step of the orthopedic healing process, Christus officials previously said. That includes an initial physician visit, diagnostic imaging, surgery, rehabilitation and recovery.

The NorthPark campus was established in 2014 and includes Christus Good Shepherd’s Emergency Center, imaging center and outpatient lab. The offices of Christus Trinity Clinic Obstetrics/Gynecology, Christus Trinity Clinic Pediatrics, ENT Associates of East Texas and Longview Orthopedic Clinic Association also are at NorthPark.

Alton Halloween Parade thrill thousands

[ad_1]

ALTON — It’s no surprise that Alton Orthopedic and Sports Medicine, headed by Dr. Bruce Vest, won first place in the 105th Alton Halloween Parade Monday night.

But there were a whopping 20 commercial floats in the competition, a record in the parade’s modern era according to East End Improvement Association members.

“This is the most we’ve ever had,” said EEIA’s Tom Pelot. “There’s a lot of hard work in these floats.”

Commercial float makers paid $200 each to be in the parade with cash prizes for the best commercial float. Alton Physical Therapy took second place with Tarrant and Harman in third.

Winners in the other categories were

• Junior Youth Division: first, East Alton Skating Academy; second, Alton Middle School; third, St. Ambrose School; and fourth Cub Scout Pack 8001

• Senior Youth Division: first, Paisa Bird Soccer Team; second, AHS Dance Team; third, Marquette Homecoming; fourth, Alton Marching 100

• Family/Neighborhood: first, the Geisen Family; second Fred’s Towing; third, Scott Schultz Jurassic; fourth Don Fuller

• Organizations: first, Great Rivers Research and Education Center; second, Great Rivers Museum; third, Jacoby Arts Center; and fourth Alton Pride.

Parade organizers and sponsors East End Improvement Association held a long parade this year at more than an hour long.

The procession included a crowd favorite, the Rolling Nobles, but missing was the giant Schnucks cart, which revelers noticed.

Monday night’s parade was a flurry of celebration of Halloween.

The parade started at about 7:15 p.m. The Alton Police Department and EEIA member marshals made sure all were safe with no incidences reported during the 1.8-mile parade.
